30 Minutes of Exercise a Day Can Boost Your Brainpower

Brainpower

Over a decade’s worth of research has consistently shown that exercise is good for your brain as well as your body. And this isn’t just a short-term effect, exercise can provide a lasting brain boost, unlike the quick mental kick you’d get from a cup of coffee.

Studies have found that people who exercised during their workday were 23% more productive on those days, performed 20% better on memory tests after exercise than they did before and increased their problem-solving abilities by 20%.

Years ago it was thought that once neurons in your brain died, they couldn’t be brought back. This meant that deterioration and progressive memory decline was an inevitable part of aging. But research has shown that your brain is capable of rejuvenating and regenerating itself throughout your life, and that exercise is key to this process, causing permanent structural changes to the brain itself.

Here’s how…

Exercise pumps extra blood to the brain delivering the oxygen and nutrients it needs to perform at max efficiency. Every muscle you move also floods your brain with chemicals that enhance functions such as memory, problem solving, and decision-making. Experienced regularly, all that rushing of blood and hormones primes your brain to grow.

Researchers scanned the brains of people who exercised for a total of three hours a week, for a duration of six months. They discovered an increase in the size of the hippocampus, the part of the brain that controls memory and learning.

So what kind of exercise should I do, and how much?

Doing cardio, increasing your heart rate and breaking a sweat will allow your heart to pump a good supply of blood to the brain, but it is also suggested that resistance training – bodyweight training or anything that pits your body against gravity, like yoga – works your muscles, which stimulates growth changes in the brain too, though to a lesser extent. We recommend a varied exercise program that includes a high proportion of aerobic activity.

The best part? Just 30 minutes of exercise each day will help boost your brain power.
