Exercise Makes You Feel Attractive Regardless of Weight, Size, Gender or Age

Exercise isn’t just about your physique. It’s about making yourself feel better physically and mentally.

The determination required to get up and get active creates an immediate sense of empowerment, which grows day by day, every time you exercise. It’s all about setting and achieving a series of goals - you start out hoping to walk for a half an hour every day, then you manage to take a class a once a week. Soon, you may be running every week and taking regular classes. Each time you succeed, you get a sense of accomplishment and improve your self-confidence. The sense of pride that comes with achievement, especially when you push your boundaries, cannot be underestimated.

The good news is, this sense of increased self-esteem, of empowerment, can be felt from the very first time you exercise. A recent British study found that people who began a regular exercise program felt better about their self-worth, their physical condition and their overall health compared with those who stayed home. The best part was that their self-worth crept up right away — even before they saw a significant change in their bodies.

“You don’t need to improve your fitness level to improve your self-perception of how fit you are,” says Adrian Taylor, PhD, an exercise researcher at the University of Exeter in England and the study’s lead investigator. And from there it’s only a short leap to enjoying healthier self-esteem, he adds. “Our self-worth is directly tied to our energy levels, our feelings of competence and our perceived attractiveness.”

So essentially, by taking charge of your fitness, your health and (ultimately) aspects of your physique that you feel less happy about, you quickly begin to view yourself more positively, with pride and confidence, before any external physical changes have taken place. And this sense of achievement will only grow over time, as you get fitter, tone up, lose weight and feel happier.

That first exercise class is always the hardest, but now you know that after just half an hour, you will feel better about how you look, it doesn’t seem like such a leap of the imagination, does it?
