Regular Exercise Reduces Your Risk of Serious Illness by up to 50%

Ok, so this is a serious one...

People who do regular activity have a lower risk of many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and some cancers. According to the NHS, exercise is the miracle cure we’ve always had, but, as a nation, we have neglected to take our recommended dose for too long.

The risk of developing cancer increases steadily from the age of 40, and the risk of heart disease from the age of 55. 1 in 2 people in the UK born after 1960 will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their lifetime. Cancer is a disease which causes more than 1 in 4 deaths in the UK, that’s around 440 people per day. Almost 1 in 5 men and 1 in 8 women die from heart disease, and it is responsible for the deaths of an average of 224 people each day. These are scary statistics.

But, there is positive news too. The statistics backing up the benefits of regular exercise are also pretty dramatic.

Here’s the data. It is medically proven that people who do regular physical activity have:

● up to a 35% lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke

● up to a 50% lower risk of type 2 diabetes

● up to a 50% lower risk of colon cancer

● up to a 20% lower risk of breast cancer

● a 30% lower risk of early death

● up to an 83% lower risk of osteoarthritis

● up to a 30% lower risk of depression

● up to a 30% lower risk of dementia

That makes for better reading. So what should I be doing?

It is recommended that everyone gets active, one way or another, every day. Ideally, adults will do 150 minutes of exercise a week – that’s half an hour each weekday. This could be something as simple as walking, but it needs to increase your heart rate to the point where you breathe faster and feel warmer. So that’s some pretty quick walking... or better yet, take a 30 minute class each day. (Hint, we know just the place!)
